Fly-fishing
with children, like so much of parenting, is about providing
the opportunity, in the most ideal circumstances possible,
and allowing your children their freedom. We try to
keep things simple: we don't talk about going to catch
fish, we talk about visiting a stream or river; we don't
make 3 hour hikes to a fishing spot, we take short hikes
(dictated by the youngest's capability); we don't provide
them equipment so expensive that we're focused on protecting
it, we buy equipment designed to be used, and used by
children (if possible).
Fly-fishing,
like any sport, requires GEAR. Lots of gear doesn't't
dictate success. However, the right gear can extend
and improve the quality time spent fishing. When starting
out with a child, there are some key components to consider
in addition to access to a fly rod/reel. |
